At a meeting of Te Puna Kōrero on 19 September 2024, elected members approved the grant of an easement to to Kāinga Ora over Cannons Creek Park and the temporary closure of parts of Cannons Creek Park and Bothamley Park.

Kāinga Ora, Porirua City Council, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira alongside civils and infrastructure experts Te Aranga have been exploring stormwater and wastewater upgrades required for Te Rā Nui – Eastern Porirua Development Project. The design of these wastewater and stormwater upgrades have been informed by community feedback received through the Te Rā Nui led engagement in 2021 and 2022, and further community design workshops in 2023.

The proposed wetland is to be constructed at the northern end (bottom) of Cannons Creek Park along with a range of stormwater and wastewater upgrades throughout the park. This will improve the existing stormwater and wastewater network and improve water quality in the wider catchment of Kenepuru Stream and Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour. Park upgrades, including a new shared path network, pedestrian connections, sports field and drainage improvements, landscape planting and new park furniture, are planned as part of these works to enhance the park and user experience.

The project is funded by Kāinga Ora.

If granted approval, works will begin on the wetland in summer 2024/2025.

Porirua City are working with the sports clubs to provide space when the fields are upgraded. During construction a field will always remain open.

The temporarily closure of parts of Cannons Creek Park and Bothamley Park will be over an approximately 18-month period.

Easements are required for:

- a new wetland and structures in the northernmost area of Cannons Creek Park to treat stormwater

- new and renewed stormwater and wastewater pipes

In this consultation phase, we want to know your views on the application for temporary closure and easements at Cannons Creek Park.

  1. Do you support the proposed temporary closures of Cannons Creek Park and part of Bothamley Park to enable the proposed upgrade and wetland development?
  2. Do you support the granting of easements over Cannons Creek Park?
