Why is Council consulting on this proposal?

Public notification of this lease application is required for a period of one month, under sections 54(2) and 119 of the Reserves Act 1977. This will be followed by a hearing of submissions, to be held in accordance with section 120 of the Reserves Act.

This process is being followed because the lease application is not in conformity with the Reserve Management Plan for Plimmerton Domain, as outlined in section 54(2A) of the Reserves Act 1977.

Why do Greater Wellington Regional Council want to lease this site?

GWRC have outlined a number of reasons why they are looking to expand capacity for Park and Ride at Plimmerton:

    1. The current Park & Ride is at capacity, and carparks at Steyne Avenue have been lost.
    2. GWRC’s forecasting shows that rail patronage in Porirua will grow 50% over the next 30 years, compared to population growth of approximately 25%. Improvements to the rail network are proposed to meet this demand.
    3. The proposed site is appropriately located given the population and density increases that will result from the Plimmerton Farm development.
