What is a road stopping?
It is the legal process undertaken to change legal road land into a fee simple land so that it can be sold.
How do you work out the value of the land subject to the road stopping?
Council will appoint a valuer who will assess the value of the land based on the added value that the road stopped land will add to the property purchasing the land.
How long does a road stopping process take?
The process of buying legal road land can be lengthy, taking a minimum of 12–18 months.
If the application was received in October 2023, why is the public notice period happening now?
Council had to agree to progress the road stopping and this occurred in November 2023. Since then, the survey and valuation work has been completed and Land Information NZ have approved the road stopping.
Who pays for the process of a road stopping?
All costs that occur during the process will be met by the applicant. These costs include but are not limited to: valuation, survey, legal costs (applicants and the Council’s), public notification, consultants, Council staff time and any hearing costs.
The site adjoins Battle Hill Regional Park so do Greater Wellington Regional Council know about the road stopping?
Yes, Greater Wellington Regional Council have provided their consent to the road stopping.
